Minneapolis-based Pillsbury is producing the bread as a joint effort with Metz Baking Group, Sioux City, Iowa, a division of Specialty Foods Corp. Pillsbury is supplying bread mixes and marketing support, while Metz is manufacturing, distributing and furnishing merchandising expertise. Pillsbury currently markets its Country Hearth brand of varietal breads under similar arrangements, but this will be the first bread to bear the Pillsbury label.

Packaged in bright blue bags with the famous Poppin' Fresh Doughboy trademark, the breads are fiber-enriched to contain as much fiber as 100% whole wheat bread and are available in white, honey white, buttermilk and wheat varieties with a suggested retail of $2.09 for a 12-ounce loaf. Hot dog and hamburger buns are also available.

Pillsbury said the Chicago market will be tested thoroughly and future expansion will be based upon the results of the test.
