Sales, including the effect of a previously announced divestiture, increased 6% to $1.9 billion. Colgate-Palmolive's net income rose 6% to $151 million.

For the first nine months of 1994, sales grew 6% from last year to $5.6 billion and its earnings increased to $448 million vs. $426 million last year, before a "one-time charge of $5 million for the sale of a noncore business in June 1994."

The company also said volume for Colgate-North America, which accounts for approximately 20% of total sales, was down 7% from last year.

Quarter Net, Sales Up at Eli Lilly

INDIANAPOLIS -- Eli Lilly here reported increased sales and earnings for its third quarter ended Sept. 30, 1994.

The pharmaceuticals manufacturer's worldwide sales were $1.817 billion, up 19% from last year. The company said its net income was $318.7 million, an 8% increase from a year ago.

Of its 19% growth in sales, the company said, 17% was achieved from growth in volume, while global selling price and exchange rate comparisons accounted for 1% each.

In a related matter, the Federal Trade Commission notified Lilly it may enforce strict conditions on the company's planned $4 billion purchase of PCS Health Systems, Phoenix, according to trade reports.

FTC officials reportedly said they worried about the possible anticompetitive effects if Lilly owned a prescription drug benefit manager like PCS, which influences purchases of billions of dollars of drugs each year. Lilly is reportedly postponing completing the PCS deal while it responds to the FTC concerns.

Vaseline Launches Leg Lotion

GREENWICH, Conn. -- Vaseline Research, a division of Chesebrough-Pond's USA here, has introduced Vaseline Intensive Care Smooth Legs & Feet Lotion.

The products will be available nationally beginning December 1994 in six-ounce bottles ($1.79), 10-ounce bottles ($2.39) and a 15-ounce pump ($3.69).

The product's introduction, according to the company, will be supported by an introductory freestanding insert offering $1 off full-size Smooth Legs & Feet Lotion or 50 cents off any other Vaseline Intensive Care Lotion. The company also said the launch would be supported by an $8 million ad campaign for the winter season.

Gillette SensorExcel Enters U.S.

BOSTON -- Gillette here introduced this month its SensorExcel shaving system to U.S. consumers. The product was launched in Europe and Canada in the summer of 1993.

The SensorExcel shaving system (razor, organizer and two cartridges) will retail for approximately $3.99. The product's refill cartridges will be priced at approximately $4.99 for a five-pack and $8.49 for a 10-pack.

Gillette announced it plans to spend more than $80 million in marketing SensorExcel in the United States.

Halls Sugar-Free Tablets Offered

MORRIS PLAINS, N.J. -- American Chicle, a division of Warner-Lambert here, has developed Halls Sugar Free cough-suppressant tablets.

Available in 25-count bags, the products come in three flavors: mountain menthol, citrus blend and black cherry. The company said Halls Sugar Free is an option for diabetics and people who prefer sugar-free products.

Naturistics Launches Fragrance

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. -- Naturistics, a division of Del Laboratories here, has launched its Naturally Vanilla fragrance collection.

The products, available in stores now, and their approximate retail prices, include: cologne body spray, 2.5 ounces, $3.50; body lotion, 6 ounces, $4, and cologne spray, 2 ounces, $9.95.
