SmithKline Beecham Revenues Up

PHILADELPHIA -- SmithKline Beecham here said sales from continuing operations for the second quarter ended June 30 were up 12% from the previous year to $2.6 billion, and operating profit from continuing operations was up 15% to $517 million.

After higher interest expenses due to the acquisitions of Sterling Winthrop and Diversified Pharmaceutical Services, pretax profit increased 3% to $474 million and earnings per share were up 6% to 11.9 cents.

The overview for the quarter was that SmithKline Beecham's new pharmaceutical products contributed to healthy sales, more than compensating for the loss in Tagamet sales. Tagamet's U.S. patent expired in May 1994.

Tambrands to Redo Tampax Line

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- This fall, Tambrands here will relaunch its original Tampax tampon line in the United States. It will be the most significant updating of the product since its introduction in 1936, according to the company.

Product changes will included a high-gloss applicator for easier use. The new applicator is fully flushable and biodegradable. The package will be redesigned with bold new graphics, a more reader-friendly package insert and a more durable wrapper, which also will be biodegradable.

L'Oreal Launches Ceramide Line

NEW YORK -- L'Oreal here has launched Fortavive Performance, a line of shampoos and conditioners with Ceramide-R, a patent-pending ingredient that replaces ceramide, a natural chemical that hair loses everyday. Each 11-ounce bottle has a suggested retail of $3.49.
