The system, provided by Catalina Marketing Co., St. Petersburg, Fla., has been used widely among supermarket retailers but the Kmart introduction marks its entry into the supercenter arena.

Joe Bullara, divisional vice president of food marketing for Super Kmart Centers, said the program is expected "to add value to our shoppers as well as our vendor partners."

The system analyzes consumer purchases at the point-of-sale and prints customized coupons.

Distribution Meeting Scheduled

SAN DIEGO -- The Distribution Conference sponsored by the Food Marketing Institute, Washington, will take place at the Loews Coronado Bay Resort here Feb. 11 to 14.

Technologies and strategies to streamline logistics will be the common thread running through virtually all conference events including the keynote address to be delivered by Edward Frazelle, director of the Logistics Institute, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta.

Other agenda items for the conference include case studies on cross-docking, the emergence of the wireless warehouse, the future of pallets and new transportation technologies.

"As the industry moves toward greater efficiencies to reduce costs and improve productivity, this conference becomes extremely important to the food distribution industry in keeping up with the latest innovations in logistics," said conference chairman Larry Cooper, vice president of distribution at Ralphs Grocery Co., Compton, Calif.
