Pretzel Cart Program in Gear

ly's Famous Soft Pretzel Co. here is beginning a program to get pretzel carts into supermarkets.

The program calls for the frozen pretzel maker's franchisees to operate a pretzel cart inside or in front of supermarkets, selling pretzels for $1.25 each. The grocery chains involved receive a $3,000 fee per cart annually. Sampling is conducted every day at the cart.

Troy Turkin, executive vice president of operations for Philly's Famous, said the first cart was in place in mid-April. He said agreements are being concluded with several chains, including one of the largest in the country.

"The stores will not only gain revenue from the cart, they will gain from added sales off the demos," he said. He said demos have proven to increase sales.

The added sales come from carrying the company's three prepackaged lines, Original Philly Twist, Variety Pack and Original Nuggets, in freezer cases. Those products have been available for about two years. Turkin said supermarkets carrying the line include Kroger Co., Albertson's, Randall's Food Markets, Fiesta Mart and Demoulas Super Markets.
