SmithKline Sales, Net Climb PHILADELPHIA -- SmithKline Beecham here reported that for the second quarter ended June 30, 1996, sales grew 17% from a year earlier, to $2.94 billion. Operating profits rose 14% in the second quarter this year to $567 million. The company's pretax profit was $523 million, while earnings per share increased 12%. SmithKline reported that all consumer categories showed sales increases in the second quarter, including over-the-counter medicines, oral health care and nutritional health care. Sales and operating profit were helped by OTC sales in the United States of Nicorette, the smoking-cessation gum. The pharmaceutical giant also reported a 17% sales gain of its broad-spectrum antibiotic, Augmentin.

ITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Tambrands Inc. here reported that net sales for the second quarter ended June 30, 1996, were $161 million, compared with $176 million in 1995. For the second quarter net earnings were 35 cents per share, compared to 36 cents per share in the same period in 1995. The tampon manufacturer says "unprecedented competitive activity" resulted in lower sales and earnings. Tambrands is extending its Tampax Naturals product line to include a 100%-cotton Naturals Non-Applicator product.
