markets here, a subsidiary of U.K.-based retailer J. Sainsbury, said last week the National Labor Relations Board has ruled that the company's decision to withdraw recognition from United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1445, Dedham, Mass., at Shaw's Worcester, Mass.-area stores was lawful. In February, Shaw's withdrew recognition from the local after receiving a petition from a majority of the 1,600 workers at its 11 Worcester-area stores saying they no longer wished to have the union represent them. The union charged that the company had misinformed workers about the consequences of their having to join UFCW Health & Welfare Fund. Shaw's said the NLRB found no merit to Local 1445's allegations that Shaw's had instigated the workers' petition to have Local 1445 decertified as their representative or that management had intimidated workers into signing the petition. Representatives of the UFCW were not available for comment.
