Albertson's Boosts Investment in Austin

id it plans to invest more than $100 million over the next four years in the Austin, Texas, market for new store and fuel center construction, including $19 million this year (nearly quadrupling the $4.8 million it spent in Austin last year), $20 million in 2003, $44 million in 2004 and $24 million in 2005. The company did not indicate how many new stores or fuel centers would open over the four-year period. Albertson's currently operates 14 stores there.

H.E. Butt Enters Dallas with Central Market

SAN ANTONIO -- H.E. Butt Grocery Co. here said it opened its first Dallas store -- a 75,000-square-foot Central Market that is the company's seventh Central Market in Texas. It is also the company's 300th store. H-E-B operates two Central Markets in Fort Worth and single locations here and in Austin, Houston and Plano. Central Market is an upscale specialty store that features expanded selections of produce, seafood, cheese, wine and other products. A chain spokesman declined comment on speculation that H-E-B plans to expand in the Dallas area exclusively with Central Market.
