NEW WORLD COFFEE & BAGELS, New York, said last week it signed an agreement to acquire Manhattan Bagel Co., Eatontown, N.J., the bagel manufacturer and franchiser that filed for Chapter 11 protection last November. The agreement covers the acquisition of Manhattan Bagel's approximately 310 store franchise systems, two bagel dough manufacturing plants and corporate operations. Both chains would retain their individual identities while consolidating their corporate infrastructure.

GROCERS ASSOCIATION, Reston, Va., has presented special awards to three retail members: the Industry Service Award to William G. Reitz, who retired as president of Scott's Food Stores, Fort Wayne, Ind., for his 46 years of service to the industry; and NGA's Spirit of America Award to Ray Bishop, operator of T&C Village Market, San Angelo, Texas, and Gene Rushing, owner of three Piggly Wiggly stores in Mississippi, for their involvement in community and civic affairs.

THE FOOD MARKETING INSTITUTE Washington, D.C., said it will co-sponsor an executive development program for middle managers with the School of Business at Portland State University, Portland, Ore. The program, entitled, "Today's Managers: Tomorrow's Leaders," is scheduled for Feb. 28-March 5 at the university's Food Industry Leadership Center, with presentations on a wide range of issues, including financial management, the human side of technology, supply and logistics management and change management.

ABC-TV said last week it plans to place its logo on 15 million bananas beginning today and continuing through Aug. 27. The move is a promotional tie-in with the network's year-old "We Love TV" campaign that uses the color yellow as a backdrop. Oval stickers will carry the ABC logo on the top half and slogans related to the campaign on the bottom. The logos will be affixed to one banana per bunch imported by Turbana Corp. in Florida. ABC, along with SN, is a division of the Walt Disney Co.
