The Florida State Attorney's Office decision not to prosecute came less than a week after Albertson's agreed to settle a civil lawsuit related to the death. The incident occurred in August 1995 when William Alexander, 33, was caught allegedly shoplifting.

QUALITY FOOD CENTERS, based in Bellevue, Wash., plans to raise $500 million through the sale of debt securities, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. According to the SEC filing, QFC said the $500 million will be added to the company's funds and will be used for general corporate purposes, including development, acquisition or capital improvement of its stores and operations. QFC recently agreed to buy Hughes Family Markets, a 56-store chain based in Irwindale, Calif., for $360 million in cash, and to buy another 25 stores from Keith Uddenberg Inc. of Gig Harbor, Wash., for $65 million. Both transactions are expected to close early this year.
