"If the members reject it, we'll go on strike because the committee is tired of negotiating," John Etten, assistant to the president of Local 555, told SN. The union's contract -- along with contracts for workers at Fred Meyer and Safeway -- expired Feb. 14. Members of Local 555 have already voted to authorize a strike if they cannot achieve wage parity with their counterparts in Portland, Ore., who earn $1 more per hour. Albertson's could not be reached for comment.

Food lion, Salisbury, N.C., has sent approximately 200 journalism professors a case study of ABC Television's controversial 1992 undercover report on the supermarket chain's food-handling practices. Food Lion previously was awarded damages in a lawsuit it filed against ABC over the television report.. The case study was written by a journalism professor at Georgetown University. ABC said it was sending out a rebuttal. SN is part of Fairchild Publications, a unit of ABC and its parent, Walt Disney Co.
