Smart & final, Vernon, Calif.-based warehouse grocery chain, said last week it has decided to consolidate its four distribution centers into a new facility in the City of Commerce, Calif., and to move its corporate headquarters and training center to an office complex nearby.

The product is a 28-ounce orange pound cake sold under the Stop & Shop label as a bake shop item in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island. The company was concerned that people with food allergies or severe sensitivities might risk a severe allergic reaction.

National Uniformity in food labeling is the goal of a bill introduced in Congress with bipartisan support in the House and Senate. Among industry groups supporting the measure are the National Food Processors Association and the Grocery Manufacturers of America, both in Washington.

Food Distributors International, Reston, Va., said last week that Robert J. Emmons has agreed to become FDI chairman for the balance of the year. Emmons, chairman of Smart & Final, Vernon, Calif., succeeds Robert E. Stauth, who resigned as FDI chairman last month shortly after resigning as chairman and chief executive officer of Fleming Cos., Oklahoma City. Emmons had been FDI vice chairman. A successor will be elected when the FDI's board meets Sept. 13, just prior to the FDI's mid-year conference in Colorado Springs, Colo.
