Wrigley Breaks Tradition With Eclipse Flash Strips

New Eclipse Flash Strips are available in cinnamon and peppermint flavors, with spearmint flavor to be added to the mix in January 2003. Suggested retail price is $1.49 for 24 strips.

The Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co. will kick off the launch of Eclipse Flash Strips with "Beyond Breath," a more than $50 million, integrated marketing campaign that includes:

Television, print and out-of-home advertising featuring actress Thora Birch and music artist Res

Celebrity seeding program to place Eclipse Flash Strips into the hands (and mouths) of Hollywood's hottest stars

Partnership with Gen Art, a leading nonprofit arts organization, to offer grants to emerging artists

Widespread sampling to drive awareness and trial of Eclipse Flash Strips, including a partnership with United Airlines for distribution on all domestic flights.

"With this exciting multifaceted campaign, we're confident that Flash Strips will build on the Eclipse brand's already-significant equity, making it Wrigley's first ever cross-category mega-brand," said Kathryn Olson, vice president, U.S. consumer marketing, Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co., in a prepared statement.

Mentos Unveils Enjoyable Breath Mint

ERLANGER, Ky. -- Mentos is taking aim at a new segment in the mint category with the introduction of its newest product, Breathmakers.

Mentos Breathmakers position themselves as an attractive alternative to tongue-scorching mints.

Instead of being packaged in the signature Mentos cylinder-shaped "rolls," Breathmakers come in a 1.2-ounce cardboard box featuring a locking mechanism.

And rather than elliptical-shaped Mentos discs, Breathmakers are chewy mints, each about the size of a pencil eraser. The product is available in two flavors: spearmint and wintergreen.

Advertising launched last month with a print campaign directed at consumers between the ages of 18 and 34.

Mento's Breathmakers are expected to be available at most stores early this fall for a retail price ranging from 89 cents to 99 cents in most parts of the country.

TIC TAC SILVERS INTRODUCES NEW EVERYDAY PACKAGING

SOMERSET, N.J. -- In a move designed to create greater profits for retailers, Ferrero U.S.A. here is introducing new packaging for the everyday Tic Tac Silvers box, featuring a cardboard box with enhanced graphics and a window through which the product can be seen. This change reduces the cost to consumers and doubles sales potential for retailers.

Silvers are individually wrapped candy mints that are available in two flavors: peppermint and orange. The new suggested retail price for Silvers everyday candy mints is $1.99, a reduction of $1.00 from the original price of Silvers in a plastic container.

Tic Tac Silvers is still available in plastic for seasonal packaging, including the Tic Tac Silvers Large Christmas Hexagon and the new Tic Tac Silvers Large Valentine's Day heart and Tic Tac Silvers Easter Egg. The suggested retail price for these items is $3.99.

A national FSI dropped last month, and floorstands and shelf trays are available for product display.

Ferrero U.S.A. Inc. also produces Tic Tac mints, Nutella hazelnut spread and Rocher chocolate.

Cadbury launches mental energy boost chocolate bar

LONDON -- Cadbury is challenging energy-drink companies with Britain's first stimulant chocolate bar.

Cadbury says its new Boost Guarana is intended to stimulate mental energy by increasing attention span and alertness. It claims its new chocolate bar matches leading energy drinks in its stimulant properties and in terms of physical motor response.

Guarana is a South American plant extract known to native inhabitants for centuries. It is a berry that grows specifically in Venezuela and northern Brazil whose seeds contain guaranine, which is a stimulant similar to caffeine. The name Guarana is derived from the Guarani tribe.

One bar of Boost Guarana contains 54 milligrams of caffeine, which is similar to a cup of coffee.

Cadbury estimates the energy-boost product market to be worth £750 million. Leading brands in the field include Red Bull and Lucozade.

Got Milk? Campaign Brands New Candies

BERKELEY, Calif. -- GOT MILK?, the famous tagline synonymous with milk-craving desperation, is branding a new line of premium caramel candies under a licensing agreement between the California Milk Processor Board (CMPB), creator of the advertising campaign, and Maryland-based Sherwood Brands Inc.

GOT MILK? Caramels rolled into stores nationwide last month.

The buttery-tasting caramels are fortified with low-fat milk, calcium, iron and vitamins A, C, D and E. Sold in the candy aisle, the soft-and-chewy treats are available in three flavors: original, chocolate and strawberry caramel.

The product is available at select grocery chains and convenience stores. The 5.8-ounce bags retail for approximately $1.79 to $1.99.

Seattle Chocolates Offers Holiday Gift Boxes

SEATTLE -- Seattle Chocolates will celebrate the holidays this year with its annual holiday gift boxes.

Signature milk chocolates fill the company's one-ounce Jack-O-Lantern Truffle Box. The new specialty box, which includes jack-o-lantern cut-outs that display the individually wrapped truffles inside, is available at specialty and fine grocery stores across the country.

The company's new Snowman Truffle Box, a one-ounce icy blue box with a scarf-wrapped snowman cut-away and snowflakes, is filled with three individually wrapped milk chocolates.

Other products in the company's holiday gift-box collection include the Harvest Holiday Collection, the Holiday Collection, Star of David and the Celebrate! Box.

Jelly Belly Valentine Gift Box Features New Flavors

FAIRFIELD, Calif. -- The Jelly Belly Candy Co. here has introduced a new Valentine gift box of the company's popular jelly beans filled with an updated selection of 24 flavors.

The gift box is decorated with a seasonal illustration of two love birds and features each flavor in its own pocket. The selection now features four new flavors of caramel corn, Dr Pepper, juicy pear and sizzling cinnamon. The 10-ounce boxes are packed 12 to a shipping case.

Nestle Turtles Go Nuts, and Sugar Free

GLENDALE, Calif. -- Nestle has extended its Turtles line to include Nestle Turtles Peanut and Nestle Turtles Sugar Free.

Nestle Turtles Peanut is a sequel to the Original Turtle made with pecans. It comes in two packs: stand-up bags with individually wrapped mini Turtles and three-piece bars.

Nestle Turtles Sugar Free , available in both pecan and peanut varieties, is the first among Nestle's line of confections to enter the growing sugar-free category. The product targets diabetic consumers, as well as those who simply wish to monitor their sugar intake for a healthier lifestyle.

Double Bubble Goes Sugar Free

CONCORD, Ontario -- Dubble Bubble here has launched Sugar Free Double Bubble Gum to meet the demands of the increasingly health-conscious market.

The new item is available in two formats: a 30-count peg bag with a suggested retail price of $1.29 per bag, and a 200-count display box with a SRP of 10 cents per piece. Each piece of gum is individually wrapped.
