USDA Approves Irradiation On Imported Produce

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture published in the Federal Register last week a new rule permitting the use of irradiation on imported fruits and vegetables that are often subject to fruit fly infestation. Currently, the only irradiated produce sold in the U. S. are papaya and some other specialty fruits from Hawaii. This rule could have a substantial impact, given that up to 40% of produce sold domestically is imported, observers said.
