RETAILERS AUTHORIZED TO ACCEPT PEANUT BUTTER RETURNS

OMAHA, Neb. — ConAgra here has authorized retailers to accept returns of jars of all varieties of Peter Pan peanut butter and Great Value peanut butter marked with the “2111” product code, for a full refund. Last week the Food and Drug Administration identified 290 people from 39 states who had become sick from an outbreak of salmonella linked to jars of Peter Pan peanut butter. Jars of Wal-Mart's Great Value peanut butter beginning with the product code “2111” are also believed to put consumers at similar risk of contamination because they're manufactured in the same ConAgra plant as the Peter Pan peanut butter. Great Value peanut butter has not been linked to the cases of salmonella infection. “Wal-Mart has sent directions to our stores and clubs to immediately remove all impacted Peter Pan Peanut Butter and Great Value peanut butter,” according to a statement issued by Wal-Mart Stores. “As an additional precautionary measure, we have also put a sales restriction on the products in question so that, should one inadvertently be scanned, a restriction notice will come up for the cashier.”
