Canadian Man Dies of Mad Cow Variant
h officials here confirmed that a Canadian man recently died last week of the human variant of mad cow disease, though they cautioned the victim likely contracted the disease in the United Kingdom. The man, who has not been identified, had been hospitalized suffering from a strain of the disease known as new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a malady believed to be contracted by eating beef infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy. The disease first surfaced in the 1980s in the United Kingdom. It was the second known death in North America this year related to the disease.
Publix Invests in Restaurant Chain
LAKELAND, Fla. -- Publix Super Markets here said last week it has made an equity investment in Crispers, a 13-unit quick-serve restaurant chain based here. Crispers, founded in 1989, offers "a broad variety of salads, sandwiches and soups" that target "the health-conscious customer," according to Publix.
UNITED'S Market Street to DEBUT IN Dallas
DALLAS -- United Supermarkets, Lubbock, Texas, is planning to enter the Dallas-Fort Worth market with its upscale Market Street concept featuring gourmet and prepared foods, a spokeswoman for United told SN. According to local reports, one store in Colleyville is scheduled to open early next year, and another store will be located in McKinney. Both 70,000-square-foot stores will dedicate about a third of their space to prepared foods, and will include pharmacies and gas stations. United, which operates more than 40 stores in other markets, has three other Market Street stores in Texas.
Former Demoulas BUYER Guilty OF Theft
BOSTON -- A former buyer for the Demoulas Market Basket chain, based in Tewksbury, Mass., pleaded guilty to receipt of stolen money and filing false income tax returns here in a case involving the theft of checks from Demoulas and some of its vendors. Wayne A. Dick faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine on the theft charge and three years in prison and a $100,000 fine on the tax charge when he is sentenced on Nov. 21, according to the U.S. Attorney Michael J. Sullivan. Dick could not be reached for comment.
Fleming to Supply C-Store Company in Pa.
DALLAS -- Fleming here said last week that would begin supplying Shipley Stores, a 34-unit convenience-store company operating under the Tom's and Cigarette Cellars banners in central and eastern Pennsylvania. Fleming will supply the stores with food products from its c-store distribution facility in Altoona, Pa. Shipley previously had been supplied by TripiFoods, Buffalo, N.Y.
