s ruled earlier this month at an emergency hearing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court here that Stop & Shop Supermarkets, Quincy, Mass., an Ahold operating company, was entitled to interview and obtain documents from the creditors of Big V Supermarkets, Florida, N.Y., according to a Big V spokesman. The spokesman also told SN that Wakefern Food Corp., Elizabeth, N.J., was granted identical discovery rights.

As previously reported, Stop & Shop and Wakefern have submitted rival bids to the creditors to acquire Big V, a 31-store chain -- and the largest member of Wakefern, a retailer-owned cooperative -- that has been operating under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection since November 2000. Stop & Shop requested Friday's hearing when Wakefern announced earlier this month that it had reached an agreement with Big V's major creditors.

Stop & Shop declined comment. Wakefern could not be reached for comment.
