SHAW'S SUPERMARKETS, East Bridgewater, Mass., will enter New York's Hudson Valley market next year with eight stores in Orange, Rockland and Westchester counties. Shaw's broke ground last week on a 54,000-square-foot store in Nanuet, N.Y., and site work has also begun for a 65,500-square-foot store in New Rochelle N.Y. The chain plans to build six more units in the area, said spokesman Bernard Rogan.

Shaw's broke ground last week on a 54,000-square-foot store in Nanuet, N.Y., and site work has also begun for a 65,500-square-foot store in New Rochelle N.Y. The chain plans to build six more units in the area, said spokesman Bernard Rogan. Shaw's southward expansion was accelerated by the 1996 acquisition of 12 Edward's stores in Connecticut from Ahold USA, Atlanta.

A COMPLAINT has been filed by the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, Local 1360 with the National Labor Relations Board against Pathmark Stores, Woodbridge, N.J., charging that it has not been forthcoming with the union about what stores it has decided to close.

AMERICAN STORES CO., Salt Lake City, announced last week a two-for-one stock split for all shareholders of record as of July 1, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing. The split, the third for the Salt Lake City-based supermarket chain since 1991, also gives common stockholders one right per share to purchase one eight-hundredth of a Series A preferred share for $31.25. The rights expire next March.
