Lowes Foods Offering Irradiated Ground Beef
become the latest, sizeable supermarket retailer to introduce fresh, irradiated ground beef to customers. The 105-store operator will offer irradiated, 93% lean ground beef and 93% lean ground beef patties in one-pound packages at 48 stores. In May, Wegmans Food Markets, Rochester, N.Y., became the first retailer to introduce a line of private-label, irradiated fresh product. Officials did not disclose how Lowes will merchandise its products. The beef will be processed by Surebeam Corp., San Diego, at one of its facilities, and shipped to the retailer.
Marsh Launches Hispanic Format
INDIANAPOLIS -- Marsh Supermarkets here said it was scheduled to open its first Hispanic-oriented store last week. The 15,000-square-foot Saving$ Mercado here will carry well-known Hispanic brands. The company added that the unit's entire 26-person staff is fluent in English and Spanish.
