authorized four more producers of natural and organic eggs to use the "Certified Humane Raised and Handled" label, a move that will greatly increase the availability of HFAC-certified eggs in stores nationwide. Farmers Organic Foods International, Alma Center, Wis.; Giving Nature Foods, Newtown, Pa.; Nest Fresh Eggs, Denver; and Phil's Fresh Eggs, Forreston, Ill., are the companies just certified, after having proved to HFAC's satisfaction the humane treatment of their hens. A New Hampshire producer, Pete & Gerry's Organic Eggs, previously received HFAC certification. HFAC is a national non-profit organization supported by humane animal care foundations and individuals. Meanwhile, retailers such as EarthFare, a natural food chain based in Asheville, N.C., and the country's two largest natural food retailers, Wild Oats Marketplace and Whole Foods Market, have pledged they will not source eggs from producers who cage their hens.
