MILFORD, Conn. - Subway, the sandwich chain, is expanding its presence in supermarkets, opening counters and kiosks in conventional food stores as well as Wal-Mart supercenters. As of last week, Subway had units in 1,180 Wal-Mart stores and 78 traditional supermarkets across the country. The newest one opened last month inside Wingerts Food Store in Mayville, Mich. Earlier in May, Food Rite, Tiptonville, Tenn., became the franchisee of its third in-store Subway restaurant. "We've made the decision to pursue such arrangements with supermarkets and other retail food stores," Subway spokesman Les Winograd said. "We see good results. To get the word out, we've been sending representatives to [retail] conventions such as the National Grocers Association's." Subway operates 25,000 locations in 83 countries.
