The chain is replacing Chief Executive Officer Danny Wegman's signature on the product guarantee statement with "The Wegmans Family" signature. "With Danny's two daughters now involved in the business (especially with Colleen being named president last year), this change seemed logical," Mary Ellen Burris, the chain's senior vice president of consumer affairs, wrote in a consumer column. Label designs are also being updated on products where there is a similar national brand. The new design is described as a "vertical color band with a prominent picture of what's inside." Canned fruit and juices will be the first categories to be updated.

COUPON USE ROSE IN 2005: STUDY

MINNEAPOLIS - Coupon use and their face value increased in 2005, as marketers sought to make an impact with new-product launches, co-marketing promotions and free product offers, Marx Promotion Intelligence here reported. More than 253 billion coupons were delivered via Sunday newspaper freestanding inserts in 2005, a 4.2% increase over 2004. Meanwhile, coupon face values rose 11.5% to $1.15, and the use of buy-one, get-one-free offers saw significant growth, the FSI coupon tracker reported in the Marx FSI Trend Report. The number of manufacturers and retailers participating in co-marketing promotions rose 24% and 26%, respectively, while the total number of co-marketing pages grew 13.4% in 2005, the fifth straight year of double-digit growth. Household products and vitamins saw the biggest uptick in FSI distribution, according to the firm.
