Piggly Wiggly is an umbrella organization of more than 600 franchised stores in 18 states that combined for volume of approximately $3.2 billion in 2000. Although Fleming franchises all the stores, it serves as a wholesale supplier for only some.

Publix Launches Online Service

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Publix Super Markets here said last week it has launched its online delivery service. PublixDirect.com is currently available in 13 Miami-area ZIP codes. The company said it expects to expand service to an additional 28 ZIP codes by the end of the year, targeting full launch completion by spring 2002. Commented Tom O'Connor, president, PublixDirect, "We chose to implement the service through a rollout of ZIP codes. This allows us to make the necessary adjustments within a smaller audience."

H-E-B To Open Central Market In Metroplex

SAN ANTONIO -- H.E. Butt Grocery Co. here is scheduled to open the first unit of its fresh-store format, Central Market, in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex Wednesday -- a 70,000-square-foot store in Fort Worth. Two more Metroplex stores have been set -- one in Plano, Texas, due to open later this year, and one in Dallas set to open early in 2002. The company has four other Central Markets -- two in Fort Worth, one in Houston and one here. A spokeswoman told SN earlier this year the company is opening the stores cautiously to see how the format develops before committing to a wider rollout.

Kmart To Build Five Superstores In The Dominican Republic

TROY, Mich. -- Kmart Corp. here said it will enter the Dominican Republic by opening five superstores over the next three years. The first store is scheduled to open December 2002, in Santiago, 113 miles north of the capital, Santo Domingo. The retailer already has 26 stores in Puerto Rico and four in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
