ALBERTSON'S INSTALLING WINDOWS-NT POS

rtson's here said last week the chain is on target to complete the installation of 700 new Windows-NT-based StoreLine POS systems by the end of the year. The system is manufactured by Retailix, Ra'anana, Israel.

Albertson's said it has already installed 500 of the new units.

"Albertson's chose the Retailix StoreLine solution for three main reasons," said Thom Imlay, vice president of Front End Systems for Albertson's. "First, it's based on the Microsoft operating platform, allowing us to integrate POS with the company's overall technology infrastructure. Second, it is a proven product. Third, the advanced open architecture allows us to utilize best-of-breed hardware components."

GIANT EAGLE SIGNS WITH FREEMARKETS

PITTSBURGH -- Giant Eagle here said last week it signed an agreement with FreeMarkets, a company also headquartered here. FreeMarkets provides platforms and software applications for electronic procurement.

Under the terms of the agreement, Giant Eagle will continue to use FreeMarkets for sourcing goods and services for its operations through 2003. "We are very pleased to be extending our relationship with FreeMarkets," said David Shapira, chairman and CEO of Giant Eagle.

LUNDS OPENS STORE OF THE FUTURE

MINNEAPOLIS -- Lunds, an eight-store independent headquartered here, last week opened what it is calling its "store of the future."

The Plymouth, Minn., store features self-checkout, Web kiosks and advanced POS systems from NCR, Dayton, Ohio.

Lunds President Tres Lund said the store opening is important "because technology is the key to customer service, not an impediment. Advances in technology put the customer in control, and empowerment is the ultimate form of service."

SUPERVALU TO CLOSE PA. WAREHOUSE

MINNEAPOLIS -- Supervalu here said last week it will close its warehouse in Plymouth, Pa., on Sept. 9, eliminating about 180 jobs. The move comes as a result of the company's decision to sell 19 Laneco stores in the region.
