SAFEWAY, Pleasanton, Calif., said last week a San Joaquin County Superior Court judge gave it permission to regulate the activities of Teamsters leafleting on store property. Safeway also said a court hearing on its request for a preliminary injunction has been set for Dec. 4. Teamsters Local 439, Stockton, Calif., is on strike against the third-party company that operates the distribution center that is the primary supplier for Safeway's northern California, Nevada and Hawaii stores. Steve Burd, Safeway chairman, president and chief executive officer, told an investors' conference, "We believe our business will bounce right back when the strike is over. And while it's premature to discuss the impact on sales or earnings, our attitude is, if sales bounce right back, then any earnings impact should be ignored because it's just a moment in time. [This strike is] causing a momentary disruption in our in-stock conditions, but the stores will soon be fully stocked." The strike began Oct. 18 at a distribution center in Tracy, Calif., operated by Summit Logistics, a member company of Tibbett & Britten, Toronto, which operates warehouses for various retailers on a third-party basis.
