Kmart, Troy, Mich., said last week it had reached a tentative agreement with the United Auto Workers on a first collective bargaining contract for 1,600 workers at Kmart distribution centers in Warren, Ohio, and Morrisville, Pa. Neither the company nor the union would discuss details of the settlement pending ratification by UAW-Kmart workers. Kmart warehouse workers in Pennsylvania voted to join the UAW in October 1998. Workers at the Ohio warehouse voted to join the union in January 1999. The union said it had been negotiating with Kmart for this first contract for more than a year.

Wild Oats said steps taken by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas and the U.S. government to protect swordfish should ensure the long-term sustainability of the fish. However, the National Audubon Society has said Chilean sea bass still faces extinction in 2005 and attempts to protect the orange roughy from overfishing have been inadequate, according to the company.
