Peapod, Chicago, said last week it is ending its 10-year relationship with Jewel-Osco, the Northlake, Ill.-based division of Albertson's, Boise, Idaho. Peapod will begin this week stocking its two Chicago-area warehouses directly from other distributors, including two companies -- American Sales Co., Lancaster, N.Y., and Tops Markets, Williamsville, N.Y. -- affiliated with Ahold, Zaandam, Netherlands, which in April became a majority shareholder in Peapod. American Sales will supply Peapod with health and beauty items and Tops will supply national brands and private-label goods. A Peapod spokeswoman told SN the company is changing its distributors to "realize efficiencies because of our relationship with Ahold."
