UNITED FOOD AND COMMERCIAL WORKERS INTERNATIONAL UNION LOCAL 881, Oak Brook, Ill., said last week its 18 members working in the bakery, deli and general merchandise area at a Bourbonnais, Ill., Kroger supermarket returned to work Monday after a six-day strike. The members voted unanimously to accept a proposed contract negotiated between the company and the union that gives half the workers immediate coverage under the health insurance plan covering other Kroger employees in Illinois and will bring the remainder under the plan before the new contract expires. "The members went on strike as a last resort in an effort to gain health benefits equivalent to what their coworkers receive," said Ron Powers, Local 881 president and UFCW vice president. "I admire the strength of these workers to stand up to fight for equal rights."
