Tollefsen said the council chooses fish that are a good value to consumers, both in terms of price and availability. He said the council has made an effort to introduce nontraditional choices, like December's pick of monkfish, to retailers and consumers.

The council sends out newsletters, posters and other educational material as a way to raise awareness of the locally harvested seafood.

Tollefsen estimated there are 1,500 supermarket units in New York state that carry seafood. The council has about 120 retail members, and it is trying to expand that, he said.

February's fish and shellfish of the month are flounder and oyster, respectively, he said.

The New York Seafood council was founded in 1990 as a statewide seafood industry marketing and promotion organization.
