Kathryn Albertson
- Funeral services were scheduled here last week for Kathryn Albertson, whose late husband Joe founded the Albertson's supermarket chain here. She was 93. With $5,000 of savings and $7,500 borrowed from her aunt, Kathryn and Joe were able to open the first Albertson's store here in 1939. Kathryn served on the Albertson's board of directors from its inception, and was appointed director emeritus in 1999. Active philanthropists, Joe and Kathryn's efforts culminated in 1996 with the creation of the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation, which has provided $35 million annually to Idaho public schools. In 1997, Kathryn was recognized for her philanthropy when she was named second on the list of Fortune magazine's "40 Most Generous Americans."
John Mabee
DEL MAR, Calif. -- John Mabee, former owner of Big Bear Markets and a nationally known horse breeder, died here on April 24. He was 80. Mabee began his grocery career in 1944 with a single store. He also managed a Lucky's and Food Basket stores. In 1951 Mabee founded Big Bear Markets and Cook's Markets, a chain of about 24 stores in the San Diego area. Mabee began selling off stores in 1993 to Albertson's and other operators.
