CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Private services were held here last month for Herbert St. Goar, who served 60 years with food distributor Dixie Savings Stores, including a stint as its chief executive officer. St. Goar was born in 1916 in Hamburg, Germany, and began at Dixie Savings not long after arriving in the United States in 1938. He served in the U.S. Army Intelligence Branch as a political adviser during World War II. St. Goar, who also served as vice president for Dixie Savings, was active in the National Grocers Association and was a member of its Asparagus Club. He served as president of the Southeastern Food Cooperative Association from 1980 to 1982. St. Goar is survived by his wife, Maria, and by children Edward St. Goar and Elisabeth Wert and their families.
