WOODBRIDGE, N.J. -- Reflecting the first moves by its new top executive, Pathmark here said last week it plans a "significant" downsizing and restructuring effort early in 1997.
ownsizing will involve personnel cutbacks at the company's administrative level. The restructuring will entail finding new ways for store personnel to do existing jobs, partly by interacting more with customers. Store-level personnel are unlikely to lose their jobs.
He said the chain has not yet decided how many office-level positions might be eliminated.
However, local observers said cutbacks are likely to affect 20% to 25% of office- and administrative-level personnel. SN was unable to determine how many of the company's 30,000 employees work at those levels.
Gutman said Pathmark will close a leased facility in Carteret, N.J., and move the accounting personnel housed there to its main offices here.
