WOODBRIDGE, N.J. -- Reflecting the first moves by its new top executive, Pathmark here said last week it plans a "significant" downsizing and restructuring effort early in 1997.

He said the chain has not yet decided how many office-level positions might be eliminated.

However, local observers said cutbacks are likely to affect 20% to 25% of office- and administrative-level personnel. SN was unable to determine how many of the company's 30,000 employees work at those levels.

Gutman said Pathmark will close a leased facility in Carteret, N.J., and move the accounting personnel housed there to its main offices here.
