PATHMARK SAME-STORE SALES RISE, VOLUME OFF FOR QUARTER

WOODBRIDGE, N.J. -- Pathmark Stores here said same-store sales rose for the fifth consecutive quarter despite an overall sales decline during the first quarter ended May 2. Sales for the 13-week quarter fell 0.7% to $916 million, while same-store sales jumped 1.7%.

Jim Donald, chairman, president and chief executive officer, said, "We are pleased with our operating cash-flow improvement in the first quarter, as well as our same-store sales increase, which represents five consecutive quarters of same-store sales growth."
