SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Penn Traffic Co. here is testing the concept of convenience-style mini-markets in two of its remodeled units and anticipates opening six more this year, according to Joseph V. Fisher, president and chief executive officer.

Both stores are located on heavily traveled roads, and both mini-markets are housed within the main store. Each has two entrances -- one from within the store and the other from outside -- so it can operate 24 hours a day, even when the main store is closed.

Fisher said the remodeling of the Fairmont store is part of Penn Traffic's capital-investment program, under which it plans to spend $100 million over 18 months to upgrade 44 stores in all divisions.
