ATLANTA -- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention here said last week it is investigating two deaths and five illnesses that might be related to skinless beef frankfurters distributed nationwide by Marathon Enterprises, East Rutherford, N.J., under the names Sabrett and Western Beef.

The recall affects approximately 52,000 pounds of franks produced at a Marathon plant in the Bronx, N.Y., which was closed Oct. 14.

According to the USDA, listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea, as well as miscarriages, stillbirths and serious and sometimes fatal infections in people with weak immune systems.
