KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- An integrated payment-processing system has streamlined front-end operations at Bresette's IGA Marketplace here and quickened the pace of electronic payment approvals

Gayle Wood, POS coordinator at the single-store independent operator, said the new system has cut electronic payment transaction times from 15 to 20 seconds to 5 to 6 seconds.

She said the faster transaction times for credit and debit cards and electronic benefit transfers has meant customers aren't waiting in lines at the check out as long.

Wood said the new integrated system has not only sped up the pace at which customers' transactions are processed, but has also streamlined data keeping for the retailer as well.

"It's great," Wood said. "The new system incorporates our POS system with the electronic payment-processing system. Integrating it all into one."

The system Bresette's is using incorporates the ScanMaster POS platform from NCR, Dayton, Ohio, with an Integra POS payment-processing system from Lynk Systems, Atlanta.

Following the completion of a six-month pilot at Bresette's Marketplace just a few weeks ago, officials from NCR and Lynk said they signed an agreement to begin offering the integrated system to their mutual customers.

Wood told SN that following the completion of the pilot, Bresette's officials decided to keep the newly integrated POS and payment-processing system.

"Previously, our electronic payments (processing) system was separate from the POS system," said Bresette's owner, Paul Bresette Jr., in a prepared statement.

"Now, these transactions are an easy one-step process, while end-of-the-day balancing has become simpler and more efficient.

"Integra does not require a separate local area network [LAN], which reduces the complexity of the system and saves money on installation and troubleshooting. This will significantly reduce our total cost of ownership," he added.

Bresette's officials didn't reveal specific financial details on the new system.

Wood said that prior to the installation of the system, Bresette's would process electronic payments on a closed system.

She explained that the benefit of the new system is that now there is only one centralized data center that contains all of the information processed at POS, including electronic payment processing information.

Moreover, the data is now accessible via the Internet, a process that she said makes it much easier to check on any discrepancies.

Wood said that under the former system, credit card discrepancies had to be called in, a much more time consuming process.

Additionally, the new system provides a dedicated high-speed transaction line that electronic transactions are fed through rather than a much slower dial-up phone line.
