PROFIT IN SECOND QUARTER OFF FOR VILLAGE SUPER MARKET

SPRINGFIELD, N.J. -- Village Super Market here, which operates two dozen ShopRite supermarkets in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, reported net income of $660,000 for the second quarter ended Jan. 25, 1997, compared with $1.194 million in the prior year. SPRINGFIELD, N.J. -- Village Super Market here, which operates two dozen ShopRite supermarkets in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, reported net income of $660,000 for the second quarter ended Jan. 25, 1997, compared with $1.194 million in the prior year. Excluding a $581,000 gain from an asset sale in the prior year, this represents an increase in income of 6%, the company said.

R> For the six-month period ended Jan. 25, sales were $346.797 million, compared with $344.524 for the same period a year ago. Net income was $944,000, compared with $1.333 million. Net income per share was 32 cents, compared with 46 cents a year ago. Same-store sales for the six-month period increased 1.3%, the company said.
