BURLINGAME, Calif. -- GP Publications here, publisher of Game Players Sega-Nintendo and several other high-circulation consumer electronics magazines, will introduce a special display rack in time for the holiday season to encourage cross-merchandising in retail outlets.

Circulation director Maryanne Napoli said supermarkets account for 48% of the company's sales. "We are suggesting that [retailers] put in hot video game releases or game-playing accessories such as adaptors or control pads."

The display racks hold magazines on the bottom and have a tray on the top that can be used to cross-merchandise related items.

In addition to the monthly Game Players, the company publishes CD-ROM Today: The Magazine for PC and Mac Multimedia, a bimonthly, and PC Gamer, a monthly. They have a combined circulation of nearly 500,000.

A version of PC Gamer will be shipped in November issues, with an accompanying CD-ROM demo disk. The magazine and disk combination carries a $7.95 cover price.

Napoli said she hopes supermarkets will use the racks in video departments, especially in the video games aisle, instead of in the main magazine section where they are usually sold.
