JACKSON, Miss. -- Jitney-Jungle Stores of America here said same-store sales fell while last year's acquisition of Mobile, Ala.-based Delchamps helped boost sales for the third quarter and 36 weeks ended Sept. 12.
quarter rose to $667,000, compared with a loss a year ago; for the 36-week period the company said it had a loss of $7.9 million.
The company said earnings before interest, income taxes, LIFO provision, depreciation and amortization jumped 80.3% to $31 million, or 6.5% of sales, for the quarter and 44% to $76.3 million, or 5.3% of sales, for the year to date.
Gross profits as a percentage of net sales were 27.5% for the quarter, compared with 25.2% a year ago, and 26.2% for the nine months, compared with 25.3% a year ago.
