COMMERCE, Calif. -- R-Ranch Markets here said last week it has selected the Phoenix division of Fleming Cos., Oklahoma City, to supply its five stores and a distribution center in the Los Angeles area.

ing suppliers "because we determined Fleming would be able to help us in certain areas of expertise," Mike Shalabi, president and chief executive officer of R-Ranch, told SN.

One area is R-Ranch's wholesale business, which supplies 130 retailers. Shalabi said Fleming has agreed to provide some of R-Ranch's customers with shelf tags and Telxon ordering systems to enable them to scan the tags and place orders more efficiently.

"We feel we will be able to grow our wholesale business with Fleming's support," Shalabi said.

He also said Fleming's resources will enable both R-Ranch and its wholesale customers to increase their variety, particularly in the area of private label, where a test of Fleming's BestYet label "has had a tremendous response from our customers, so we feel it's time to implement that program more fully," Shalabi said.

R-Ranch's five stores average 26,000 to 30,000 square feet. Shalabi declined to pinpoint his volume, though observers said it exceeds $30 million a year.
