om the traditional can and into pouches, so it was a no-brainer when Topco Associates decided to go the same route with its Food Club Light Tuna in Water.

The co-op's tuna in a pouch is billed as a premium product and the 7.06-ounce pouch design seals in freshness, according to Topco executives. The label mentions specific features of the item including its firmer texture, no draining required quality and easy-open pouch.

It took Topco only six months to develop the item, which sells for between $2.19 and $2.29, and it was rolled out in the summer of 2003. It is also available in a White Albacore Tuna variety.

A core item in Topco's portfolio, it demonstrates innovation in private-label package design, executives told SN. It can usually be found integrated with mainstream sets in most supermarkets and it works well as a cross-promotional item alongside crackers or mayonnaise.
