HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Super Rite Corp. here said sales and earnings increased in the second quarter and first half ended Sept. 2.
9% to $374.5 million for the 13 weeks and 8.1% to $748 million for 26 weeks. Same-store sales were up 3% in both the quarter and the half.
Super Rite attributed its strong earnings to an improved performance at both the retail and wholesale levels and a reduction in interest expenses.
The company operates 15 stores in Maryland and Delaware -- 10 Metro superstore units and five Basics conventional units. It also services 238 supermar-
kets in states along the Eastern seaboard. Super Rite recently completed the remodeling and conversion of a Basics store in Towson, Md., to the Metro format.
Shareholders will vote Oct. 12 on Super Rite's previously disclosed merger with Richfood Holdings, Mechanicsville, Va.
