SEATTLE -- The Washington Wine Commission recently honored supermarket retailers for their creative, in-store displays of wines from Washington State at an awards ceremony held here.

rving as a centerpiece of a historically based theme. High-end and low-end bottles were featured with a brief history of each winery that was represented.

The display contest was held in conjunction with the premier of the statewide "From the Heart of Washington" campaign that Gov. Gary Lock is mounting this year. The campaign focuses on food items produced in the state that range from apples and seafood to poultry and wine. Point-of-sale items -- along with radio, television and newspaper advertising -- are part of the total program.

"Domestically, Washington is second in production to California," said Jamie Peha, director of marketing and promotions. "There are more than 200 wineries in the state."

Other finalists included Houghton Market, Kirkland; Top Foods, Lacey; Albertsons, Woodinville; and Albertsons, Lakewood. Judging of the displays was held during August. It is the fifth year for this annual promotion.
