LOS ANGELES -- The Strawberry Workers and Farmers Alliance, based here, is honoring supermarkets for leadership in supporting human rights, with their third annual "Respect, Honor and Dignity Award."

Retailers in the United States and Canada, including El Segundo, Calif.-based Bristol Farms; Cincinnati-based Kroger; Whole Foods Market, based in Austin, Texas; Schnuck Markets, St. Louis; and A&P, based in Montvale, N.J., are being honored for taking progressive steps to encourage human rights for farmers and farm workers.

"Strawberries are one of the key items of our produce operation, which is a large part of our business," said Charlie Bergh, vice president of marketing for Bristol Farms.
