RICHMOND, Va. -- Richfood Holdings here said James St. Charles has been hired as the corporate vice president of store development, a new post.

St. Charles is also coordinating the company's energy policy and management for both the wholesale and retail operations.

He was vice president of facilities management for Gooding's Supermarkets, Apopka, Fla.

He began his career with Roundy's, Pewaukee, Wis., in the engineering department and progressed through the management ranks of the organization to become the corporate director of engineering.

After leaving Roundy's, he assumed the post of vice president of retail development for Certified Grocers of Florida. In this capacity, he was responsible for the supervision and budgeting of the retail development division, including new business services, real estate, market research and store planning and development.

St. Charles attended the University of Wisconsin and Milwaukee Technical College, focusing on Business Administration. He received his Professional Supermarket Designer Certification in 1992 from the National Wholesale Grocers Association. He reports to John E. Stokely, president and chief executive officer of Richfood Holdings. Richfood is the largest wholesale food distributor in the Mid-Atlantic operating region. The company supplies national-brand and private-label grocery products, frozen foods, dairy products, fresh produce, meat and nonfood items to chain and independent retailers throughout the region. The company also operates a chain of 16 retail grocery stores in the metropolitan Baltimore area. Its previously announced acquisition of Farm Fresh, Norfolk, Va., is expected to be completed in the near future.
