MECHANICSVILLE, Va. -- Richfood here will present to retailers today an integrated point-of-sale system that will enhance front-end initiatives and store-to-wholesaler communications.

The system, which is available at reduced cost through Richfood, marks the wholesaler's latest effort to expand its role beyond traditional replenishment services. The system is being introduced at Richfood's convention for retailers in Richmond, Va., today.

"I feel we're going to take point-of-sale to a whole new level," said Jim Holstrom, director of retail services. "We're doing things that will not only make our retailers' POS systems a data-capturing device and management tool, but also a revenue-generating tool."

Another benefit of the system is that it will enable store-level staff to automatically download data from the wholesaler to their in-store processor, greatly reducing manual data entry chores and paperwork.

The hardware is from Ultimate Technology, Victor, N.Y., and software from Info Systems of N.C., Charlotte, N.C.
