BEDFORD HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Riser Foods here said strong remodeling and remerchandising programs and improved operating efficiencies boosted sales for the second quarter and half-year ended Jan. 14.
Riser reported that sales increased 4.2% to $282.1 million. Same-store sales rose 9.4% during the period.
For the year-to-date, sales increased 5% to $628.8 million. Same-store sales were up 6.6% for 28 weeks.
Net income rose 12.5% to $2.7 million for the three-month period, and for the first six months, fell 56.6% to $4.9 million from $11.3 million. However, Riser said last year's figure included an accounting change for income taxes that boosted income by $6.9 million, or 85 cents per share. "Six of our 39 stores were remodeled during the last 12 months," said Ronald W. Ocasek, chief financial officer. Riser Foods operates 39 retail supermarkets in northeast Ohio. sale distributor of food and health and beauty care products. Riser also manufactures private-label ice cream and distributes frozen novelties through its Eagle Ice Cream division.
