CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Ruddick Corp. here, parent company of Harris Teeter, Mathews, N.C., said increased promotional spending has resulted in "significant improvement" in comparable store sales for the third quarter to date.

uddick president, said is "particularly gratifying, given the negative trending in comps experienced in the latter part of the second quarter.

"Recent changes in promotional activities have obviously been successful, and while these expenses do impact margin percentages, they are partially offset by the increase in gross profit dollars."

Ruddick also said earnings per share will be flat, at approximately 26 cents -- about equal to last year's third-quarter results and below analysts' estimates -- due to a slowdown in consumer spending in its American & Efrid industrial sewing thread division.
