LOS ANGELES -- Arden Group here said sales rose 12.6% to $89.2 million in the 13-week fourth quarter and 9.5% to $324 million in the fiscal year, both ended Jan. 1.

Income, however, fell 7.1% to $2.6 million in the fourth quarter. The company said that was due to expenses incurred in opening the Santa Barbara store, costs incurred to make systems and equipment Y2K compliant and a payment to a union pension fund that was not made in the fourth quarter of the previous year.
Income rose 15.8% to $11.7 million for the year, and same-store sales increased 5.9%. The company did not release same-store figures for the quarter.
