To the Editor:
our members and the National Grocers Association staff, I would like to express our sincere gratitude for the article "100 Years ... Fresh" [concerning Friedman's, Butler, Pa., SN, July 23, Page 9], written by [SN reporter] Elliot Zwiebach. The article clearly expresses the importance of independent retailers in maintaining a competitive marketplace.
In addition, the article accurately captures the role Carole Bitter Friedman [president and chief executive officer, Friedman's] and her family continue to play in the development of a successful independent retail operation.
I also applaud the editorial viewpoint by [SN Editor-in-Chief] David Orgel, "Five Rules for Independent Success," [in the same issue]. He is right on target and reflects a working knowledge and sensitivity of the marketplace and the importance of the independent sector.
